The Charleston SAME Post monthly meeting will be held at the North Towne Grille (2093 Eagle Landing Blvd., North Charleston, SC) on Thursday, July 15, 2010 at 11:30 am.

This month's meeting will feature Michael Cain, from Hussey, Gay, Bell & DeYoung , speaking on "Engineers Without Borders"

During the board meeting (10 am) and general meeting (11:30), we will be discussing the Airman & Family Readiness program at Charleston AFB.  While regulations preclude providing financial support from outside organizations, it is possible for the SAME post and/or SAME memberts to provide outreach to deployed forces in the following ways:

  • GreenCare for Troops:  A short video clip (8 minutes) will be shown during the general meeting Thursday before the speaker.  The video is hosted by Mike Rowe from the show Dirty Jobs and talks about the benefits of GreenCare.  For the benefit of members unable to attend this week's meeting, the video is located at http://projectevergreen.com/gcft/
  • Donatons of gently used items to the Airmen's Closet - These are items that airmen can pick up for free to help support themselves or families.  Blair Goodman has a list of items that are not permitted.
  • Donations to the Food Bank - The food bank for airmn occasionally runs low, so during these times the Post could host a food drive to donate.
  • "Care Packages" for soldiers during the "off season" - While Christmas is a popular time to give to our forces, they often have too many donations to send over this time of year.  Care packages for other holidays or "just because" would be most appreciated.  Our deployed forces can always use a reminder of our support.

Most Post meetings are held on the third Thursday of each month at North Towne Grill & Seafood, 2093 Eagle Landing Boulevard, North Charleston, South Carolina 29406-4074. The restaurant is across Rivers Avenue from the Northwoods Mall, near the Ashley-Phosphate Road exit from I-26 (Exit 209B).

Programs from the last few meetings are discussed on the Post Activities  page.

The Charleston District has a long history with SAME, as the District has always been involved as active members, often with committee chair, board member and presidential and vice presidential roles. Collaborating with our engineer partners in the Charleston area is an important component to the Charleston District mission.

“I am honored to have been selected as president of SAME and will strive to continue to move this organization forward during my term,” said Kirk. “As president of SAME, I plan to expand the number of young members, continue community outreach to promote the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) program and increase the professional development opportunities for our members.”

SAME is the premier professional engineering association in the United States for connecting architects, engineers and builders in the public sector and private industry, uniting them to improve individual and collective capabilities for national security. The Charleston Post was established in 1941. The current membership includes more than 200 individual members along with 30 companies and organizations representing military and civilian engineering professionals.
